REASONS TO FALL BACK IN LOVE WITH VALENTINES DAY

This cute card, from my ‘Positive Vibes’ collection, is popular all year round, but especially at this time of year! Not only would it make a great Valentine’s card, but it would be great for a ‘Palentine’s’ card too!

Many people love Valentine’s Day and everything it represents but, as with most things life has to offer, there are inevitably some people who think it is a money-making, and somewhat needless, date in our calendars.

If you are in the latter group of humans, hear me out - I want to tell you why I still love it (yes, I know I sell Valentine’s Day cards, but beyond that, I genuinely love, love).

I think most of us will agree that it is a highly commercialised ‘holiday’, but that doesn’t stop Valentine's Day being one of the most widely celebrated days all over the world. Maybe it is down to the fact that, in this busy world, some of us need a big, in-our-face reminder that we need to show up for our loved ones. It unites us in love and in friendship, ensuring we schedule quality time and, if it is what you want to do, treat your special human/s to something to show you care.

Whether you're single or in a relationship, there's something for everyone to enjoy on Valentine's Day. So, let's dive into the reasons why you should fall (back) in love with this holiday.

Don’t get me wrong, I utterly understand why some people have an overwhelming dislike for all the over-priced red roses (I’m not a fan myself) and crowded restaurants that are serving an expensive ‘set menu’ on February 14th, but not all love has to be displayed with large financial gestures (you do you!).

I prefer something more simple, such as a thoughtful note or my favourite flowers (brownie points for daffodils!). I also enjoy letting my closest pals know I’m thinking of them so, as well as giving a card to Joe, I also enjoy sending ‘Palentines’ cards to my friends on Valentine’s Day, or simply dropping them a special message to tell them how much I love them on that day (I mean, I am a big fan of telling my pals I love them at the end of every voice note, but on Valentine’s, I make it even louder!).

If you aren’t quite convinced, here are five reasons why you should consider celebrating this Valentines Day:

  1. It's a day to show appreciation for the people who matter to us and to let them know how much you care.

  2. It's an opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones, enjoy a special, home-cooked meal, or do something fun together.

  3. If gifting is your thing then it’s a great time to treat your loved one, or bestie to their favourite flowers, some choccie or a card to show your appreciation.

  4. Celebrating Valentine's Day can help strengthen your relationships and create new memories to cherish together, which is especially important with the fast pace lives we all live today.

  5. Valentine's Day spreads love and happiness and can bring joy to people's lives, surely that is a good enough reason?!

Still on the fence? I honestly don’t blame you. Like Christmas, Valentine’s Day is a huge money-making machine and we can all get fed up with the endless messages on our phones and TV’s, that’s what makes us human! So, why don’t we step away from the traditional and think outside of the box! You have someone special and you want to show them you care (and don’t have a heart that is frozen and unwilling to celebrate love! I’m kidding!)… here are three suggestions that may be worth considering:

  1. Coupons for special experiences: You can make coupons for special experiences (not those kinds of coupons, get your mind out the gutter!). I’m thinking about things such as a movie night or a romantic dinner at home or how about a late-night star-gazing with your favourite bottle of wine?

  2. Write a love letter: A heartfelt love letter can be one of the most cherished gifts and will be kept forever. The key is not to be self-conscious, just write how you feel and how the person makes you happy. It is a guaranteed win!

  3. Bake some treats for you to share. Who cares if you are not a chef, go to the supermarket and buy a ready-to-go set, add the ingredients on the packet and hey presto! It really is the thought that counts.

There is most definitely scope for you to make even the tiniest effort this Valentine’s Day and hopefully you can see that it doesn’t have to cost the Earth. A simple card, a note or a coffee date will speak volumes, but just make it different to the norm and channel those early days together.
